Ridgewalking

img019

Hike to dramatic mountain landscapes and breathtaking valley views, enchanted fungi gardens and curious rock formations along the 100-kilometer Gunma Ridgewalk. Here, natural wonders abound – there’s a reason this is one of Japan’s most famous ridge walks – and new experiences wait around every corner.

Take the southern trail to Mt. Azumaya and Mt. Asama, two of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains, or head north for relaxation, courtesy of bubbling mineral baths at Manza Onsen and Kusatsu.

These ridge walks are suitable for walkers of all ages.

Mt. Azumaya and Mt. Asama (Ridge Walk South)

If you haven’t already checked “hike a volcano” off your bucket list, then here’s your chance. Two, in fact!  Mt. Azumaya and Mt. Asama, both featured in the hiking classic 100 Famous Japanese Mountains, are a volcanic duo promising 360º views over the Kita Alps, crisp mountain air, and rare cherry blossoms in May. The hike is considered moderate but, be aware – you probably won’t make it all the way to Asama in just a day.

Manza Onsen and Kusatsu (Ridge Walk North)

Sink into restorative, milky blue and emerald waters at Manza Onsen and Kusatsu, two of Japan’s top onsen (hot spring) towns. But first, you’ll have to hike there via the northern ridge walk, which weaves through rugged mountain and valley vistas. You’ll need two days to explore both onsen towns.
